Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are a restorative and cosmetic treatment that can enhance the look, feel, and function of your teeth. There may be many reasons we recommend a crown, but whatever the reason, you can expect a dental crown to match nicely with your natural teeth. A dental crown is a hollow artificial tooth that is used as a “cap” over a natural tooth.
When Do We Recommend Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns can be used in dentistry for a wide range of procedures. Some of the most common reasons for a crown are to support and reinforce a tooth with a large filling, to cover a tooth that has had a root canal treatment, or to cover a misshapen, weakened, or discoloured tooth. They can also be placed over broken or cracked teeth, or can be used to hold a dental bridge in place. Finally, a dental crown can be used over a dental implant.
What You Should Know About Getting Dental Crowns
In order for a dental crown to fit over a tooth, some of your natural tooth material may need to be filed down before the crown is placed. Once your tooth has been filed down, we will have a dental crown created in a laboratory to fit over your tooth. You’ll need a second appointment to have the crown fitted and secured. Dental crowns can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, and great dental care usually extends their lifespan.
